On May 21 on the 21st of May Owens was back in the coaching profession as well as the USHL after he was appointed director of coaching for the Sioux Falls Stampede. He announced his resignation from coaching on March 26, 2020.
Two years after that Owens enjoys his greatest season at Colorado College, winning 31 games and marching all way to the Frozen Four and earning CC its second Hobey Baker award winner Marty Sertich. After the tremendous success of the beginning, Colorado College began to slip back into the group. Even though they were still able to record winning seasons for the next seven seasons, CC did not reach 20 wins just three times and just one more win during the NCAA Tournament before CC posted its first loss in the past 20 years, registering a record of 19-19-5 during 2012-2013. The next year was more difficult as the Tigers were unable to win seven games, and when it was over, Owens quit as the head coach following 15 years. When he announced his departure, Owens was the longest-running and most successful head coach at Colorado College’s hockey team’s in history.

Scott Owens made his first appearance with Scott Owens’ side the Colorado College Tigers during the 1975-76 season , which was one of their best (though still not a great) seasons. Although the four seasons he played in were able to see CC end with any kind of victory, they managed to secure their first conference championship during the school’s history in 1978. When he was done with school, Owens was a coach assistant to players for the team TSV Kottern, which played at different levels of the West German amateur leagues for five years prior to going back in North America.
Owens his next position was in his hometown of Madison as the General Manager of the newly-formed Madison Capitols. After two years in the post, Owens added the responsibilities as head coach in addition to his duties as a coach for the Capitols and under his guidance, the team regularly was in the top quartile of the league standings. Owens quit after the 1989-90 season to take a job as an assistant coach at Wisconsin in the position of assistant to his former director of football Jeff Sauer and moved back to his former school in the same role following the season. After four seasons as a coach with the Tigers Owens returned into the USHL as the head coach for the Des Moines Buccaneers.
