In 1991-92 Metcalfe played in the 1991-92 season for EHC Dynamo Berlin in Germany and scored 35 points (19G-16A) in the course of 25 games. He was a player in the 1992-93 season alongside ES Weisswasser, also in Germany and scored seven scores (4G-3A) in eight games, before shifting into Eisbaren Berlin. He played the remainder of the season. He scored the score of 25 points (8G-17A) during 27 contests. Metcalfe scored four score (2G-2A) in four playoff games.
Metcalfe continued playing for the Americans from 1994 to 1998, recording 55 points (19G-36A) in 63 games in 1994–95, and 2 points (1G-1A) in 5 playoff games, then had a 45-point season (21G-24A) in 71 games in 1995–96, and then had his best playoff performance with 14 points (6G-8A) in 19 games. Metcalfe’s 1987-88 season began as a player for his team, the Nova Scotia Oilers of the American Hockey League (AHL) in which he scored the score of 28 scores (9G-19A) during 43 matches. He also played in two games with Edmonton and did not score a point and was transferred with Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo Sabres, along with the Oilers their ninth-round draft selection during the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, for Steve Dykstra and the Sabres seventh-round draft pick of the 1989 NHL Draft, on February 11 in 1988. Metcalfe was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. He began his junior hockey career playing for Toronto’s Kingston Canadians of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 1983 until 1986. He appeared in the OHL for 192 games and scoring 213 goals and 125 assists (88 goals, 125 assist) as well as three goals and six assists in 10 playoff games prior to being traded with the Windsor Spitfires for the 1986-87 season. For the Spitfires, he played in 57 games and scored the score of 25 goals, 57 assist along with five goals and 5 aids in the 13 playoff matches. He was also a part of Team Canada at the 1987 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships with seven points (2 goals and 5 assists) in just six games. Metcalfe was chosen with the Edmonton Oilers with their first selection, 20th overall during the 1985 NHL Entry Draft.
Metcalfe spent the majority of 1988-89’s season in Rochester and scored 50 points (20G-31A) in 60 games. He also accumulated 241 penalty minutes.
