Donaldson took four wins to face Ding Junhui. They played in the first phase of the Shanghai Masters and had leads of 3-1 and 4-3 before Ding forced a decisive frame. Donaldson had an opportunity to avoid the shock, but he missed an easy black, and Ding took the win. Donaldson made it to the final 16 at two tournaments, the European Masters and Northern Ireland Open and lost the tournament 4-3 Anthony McGill and 4-2 to Hossein Vafaei, respectively. In the Welsh Open he beat Jack Lisowski 4-1, Mark King 4-2, Jimmy Robertson 4-0 and Mark Davis 4-3 to make it to the quarterfinals. He was up against Zhou Yuelong, who was playing in the level of the ranking tournament at the very first time, and Donaldson defeated Zhou Yuelong by 5-0. Donaldson came back from being down 4-1 to beat Judd Trump in the semi-finals to win 4-3, but fell in the final 6-3. He received PS20,000 for making the final four , and was ranked 65th in the world at the conclusion of the season. At the Welsh Donaldson saw off a trio of established players in Robert Milkins, David Gilbert and Andrew Higginson to reach the last 16 of a ranking event for the second time this season, where he was whitewashed 4–0 by Ding Junhui.
