Colcombe began his professional career as an apprentice for his club West Bromwich Albion, turning professional in July of 1990. The club released him but did not make his debut in the league until the conclusion of the following season. He joined Torquay United in August 1991. The first time he played was on the first day of the next season and was a part of Torquay’s 3-1 victory at home against Hartlepool United. He took part in the next game, which ended in a 3-0 loss against Preston North End, but was replaced and substituted with Paul Holmes for the next game. He made his mark during the second half of the season, however he was a bench player in the 1992-93 campaign. A little over three weeks into the campaign, he removed Arron Davis of the Torquay team and was given the chance to play as a left-back. He started the next season as the first left-back option in the Torquay side , and was involved in 27 times when Torquay made it to the play-offs, defeating in an unorthodox manner to Preston North End. He only played 10 times during the 1994-95 season. He was being kept out of the Torquay team through Scott Stamps and then Gregory Goodridge before being let go at the end of the season.

He was signed by Doncaster Rovers, along with teammates Torquay player Duane Darby as well as Darren Moore, on a free transfer in July 1995. His two seasons with Doncaster were marred by injuries , and his release came in May 1997 after having played just 42 times (scoring three goals) for Rovers. He was signed by Telford United on 18 July 1997 and struggled to make it into the club’s Conference team. He was transferred to Stourbridge as a free transfer that summer, and then to Blakenall in the 1999-2000 season. He left in the summer of 2000. quit the Blakenall club to sign with Redditch United and, despite being linked to Bromsgrove Rovers in the closing season, he remained in Redditch at the beginning in the season 2001/02. The player was discovered to be associated with Sky Sports presenter and Torquay United supporter Helen Chamberlain in September 2001.
