Kavanagh joined Shamrock Rovers on 27 July 2009. Kavanagh began the Rovers debut at Cork City on 11 August 2009 and made his debut at home in the Tallaght Stadium on 15 August 2009 when Shamrock Rovers played UCD during the FAI Cup, scoring his first goal for Shamrock Rovers. In 2010 Kavanagh received the League of Ireland Premier Division medal for winners, helping Shamrock Rovers to their first league title in the span of 16 years. In addition, during the 2010 season Kavanagh was a part of two Rovers’ UEFA Europa League matches with Italian titans Juventus.
On 24 November 2013 Kavanagh confirmed via his Twitter account that he had signed with Bohemians for the 2014 season.
Kavanagh spent the 2013 season at Derry City and helped the Candystripes secure a place in Europe with a 4th-place finish.
Kavanagh made his return to Ireland during July 2007, and joined Bray Wanderers. He quickly was a regular player for Bray and played 71 times for the Seagulls over the course of two years. The performances he put up for Bray attracted the attention of high-profile clubs like Derry City, Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians. While at Bray He was awarded the Republic of Ireland U23 cap in November 2007. He was awarded”Player of the Month ” by the League of Ireland in April 2008.

Kavanagh’s initial clubs was St Joseph’s Boys and Ballybrack Boys and his potential was noticed by Scouts. He joined League of Ireland club Bohemians in 2004, however, his opportunities at the club were limited to playing in the Gypsies under 21 side. Following his brief stay in Bohemians, Kavanagh signed for Wayside Celtic and he became an instant star as they won the FAI Intermediate Cup in his debut season. The following year they made it to their peak on the Leinster Senior League table and in the final round of games , the play-off was held in order to determine the winners. The team won victory in the Leinster Senior League title, winning 5-0. He scored two goals and was also given assists on the other three goals.
After his performances during the game at Wayside Celtic offers flooded in and the first one came from UCD close to home. He signed with the club the following month on a contract with an amateur club. He scored in the first five minutes of the game on his League of Ireland debut as substitute for Waterford United on 26 June 2006. His season was interrupted because he’d already booked a holiday prior to signing with UCD but the striker was able to play into the team toward the final stages of the season. He scoring three times in the UCD’s final three matches to propel UCD Students to sixth at the top of the League. The highlight was scoring the winning goal of Dalymount Park against Bohemians on 27 October 2006. A week later , he was removed off the bench and scored the winning goal against Sligo when UCD was positioned mid-table.
Following his departure from Shamrock Rovers at the end of 2011 season, Kavanagh signed for newly promoted Shelbourne on 20 January 2012.
