Scott William Arniel (born September 17th 1962) is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey player. He is also the an assistant coach at National Hockey League’s Washington Capitals. Prior to that, he was director of hockey for the Columbus Blue Jackets and associate coach of the New York Rangers.
After dividing the 1991-92 season among two teams: the Boston Bruins and the New Haven Nighthawks and Maine Mariners of the American Hockey League (AHL), Arniel continued to play the rest of his career in minor leagues. He played working with San Diego Gulls, Houston Aeros, Utah Grizzlies and Manitoba Moose of the International Hockey League (IHL). Arniel retired after the season of 1998 and 1999.
Scott was inducted into the Kingston and District Sports Hall of Fame on May 2, 2008.
After four years with the Sabres, Arniel returned to the Moose as their new head coach when he was hired by their parent club, the Vancouver Canucks. Arniel led the team to the league’s best regular season record in 2008–09 and a berth in the Calder Cup finals, earning him the Louis A. R. Pieri Memorial Award as coach of the year.
The season began in 1982 and 1983. Arniel was a part of the Jets full-time, scoring 18 points during his first season. Arniel went on to play for five seasons during his first stint with the Jets and scored a career-high 56-point season with the team in 1983-84. He was a part of with the Buffalo Sabres during the seasons 1986-1987. He would later play for four seasons in Buffalo before coming back with the Jets in the 1990-91 season.

In the off-season, he got chosen for Winnipeg Jets. Winnipeg Jets 22nd overall in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft and immediately started playing for the team. He made the NHL debut in the 1981-82 season, playing for 17 times. He was back to junior hockey with the Royals that were realigned to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in the following season. The transfer to juniors allowed Arniel the chance to participate in the 1982 World Junior Championships, helping Team Canada to their first-ever gold medal in the tournament.
After joining the ranks of major juniors as part of the Kingston Canadians of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League (OMJHL) in 1978-79, Arniel shifted over to the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League following the season, joining the Cornwall Royals. Arniel was a key player in the team’s 1982 Memorial Cup championship with a three-point hat trick in the 8-2 win against Kitchener Rangers. Kitchener Rangers on May 10 in 1981.
Arniel began his coaching career as an assistant coach in 1995 while still playing for the Houston Aeros of the IHL as a mid-season replacement. After retiring as a player in 1999, he joined the coaching staff of the Manitoba Moose as an assistant. He held that position for three years until 2002, when he was named to the Buffalo Sabres’ coaching staff as an assistant.
