Sarah J. Mahler is one of the most popular and richest Anthropologist who was born on September 8, 1959 in York, United States. Sarah J. Mahler (born 1959) is an American writer and cultural Anthropologist. Her work was within a team of anthropologists that sought to shift the study of migration to provide an more holistic approach to better understand how those who cross international borders stay connected to their ancestral homelands, and how their cultural practices as well as identities are influenced by the past and current circumstances, referred to as “transnational migration.”

She received an enviable Research Fellowship at the Russell Sage Foundation in New York City which is one of the top national Social Science Fellowships. While there, Mahler finished American Dreaming and completed her second book, Salvadorans in Suburbia: Symbiosis and Conflict.

In 2004, Mahler served as director of her department’s graduate studies program and in that year she oversaw a major shift in the graduate curriculum. In 2005 she was promoted to Director of the Center for Transnational and Comparative Studies at Florida International University. She served in that capacity in charge of numerous international study programs until 2008 when the center was closed for budgetary reasons. She then embarked on a major shift in her research, returning to an early passion for how people learn culture that she had wanted to pursue since her daughter Sophia was born.

Since 2008 she has dedicated herself wholly to studying the wide-ranging interdisciplinary literature on the brain and how infants and children learn in general, and how they learn culture in particular. The results of this research are being published (see below).

After graduating, Mahler taught at the University of Vermont from 1992 until 1997, in the Anthropology department. She also taught at Florida International University from 1997 and is still teaching courses in the department of interdisciplinary Global and Sociocultural Studies. Her research interests lie in cultural anthropology , as well as the international movement of people of people from Latin America and the Caribbean to the United States. She was part of a group of anthropologists and other researchers who are seeking to move research on migration from simply analyzing migrants’ lives in their new countries to a more extensive method called “transnational migration” which researches the ways in which people who cross international borders, yet maintain connections to their home countries and how their culture practices and identities reflect influences from both the past and current contexts. Her contributions to the paradigm change in migration studies have focussed on how migrants have gender-based relationships that change in relation to relatives who are not migratory.
