Britten paints cityscapes as well as other subjects, including still life, bears and bulls (stock market trends) as well as cats, dogs and horses, sharks, rhinos, crocodiles Nguni cattle, and dung beetles. She also paints using lipstick. Her work is inspired through Zoo City, a science fiction novel written by South African author Lauren Beukes. On her website for art, she writes: “Set in Hillbrow, the zoo city of the title, it features characters mysteriously attached to animal familiars as a form of punishment. Zoo City is riotous, chaotic and completely crazy and I loved the way it brought to life the animal energy that lurks just beneath the surface of the city. After reading the book, I started experimenting with placing animals in cityscapes, both the kind that are found in cities (dogs and cats) and those that exist in Johannesburg only as metaphors – sharks and crocodiles, for example. I’ve used a limited palette of black, grey and red to evoke the dystopian atmosphere of the city, its grey grittiness a contrast to throbbing red life. The Zoo City series led to my experiments with Ngunis, which have taken me in a more colourful direction.” The first exhibition that was publicized of her work in lipstick, known as Pulse of the City, and was inspired by an Land Rover marketing campaign, was held at the Velo café in Braamfontein in July 2012.

Britten has written two youth novels as well as three non-fiction books about local insults. In 2012, she has written “… insults are indicators of our the identity of a group. This is the reason why I began collecting South African insults back in 2004 I wanted to know what is the basis of our identities, and insults are a lens that can be used to understand the nation’s self. …”.

But hers is a necessary and hugely revealing piece, clarifying both the extent of the life-hold that emigration can exert on individuals and families, as well as the stresses it can generate.” In the past she was writing about her experience of emigration through the blog Thought Leader blog which she was able to name Gondwanaland in honor of the old supercontinent to the south, which included Africa, Australia and Antarctica as well as other landmasses of the present.
