John Lawson Hargis (born July 3 1975) is an American former competitive athlete, Olympic gold medalist, and college swimming coach. Hargis was a representative of his country in the United States at the 1996 Summer Olympics and was a part of the gold-medal winning U.S. 4×100-meter Medley relay team. He is currently director of the Pittsburgh Panthers swimming and diving team at the University of Pittsburgh.

Hargis earned his degree from Auburn with a bachelor of Science degree in sports and health promotion. After that, he started his coaching career. In the following years, he was assistant director of athletics at Auburn. Then , he was a coach at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) during in the season 2002-2003. After working at UNLV for a time, the coach was hired as an assistant coach at Penn State University, coaching the women’s team to back- to-back Big Ten Conference championships. In November 2006, he relocated into Little Rock, Arkansas, to coach his former club team called The Arkansas Dolphins. Soon after, he was appointed the head coach of the team and also the head coach at University of Arkansas, Little Rock. The summer of 2008 saw Hargis quit his team in order to return to Penn State University where he was the Head Coach for five seasons. In June 2013, he was offered the position of associate head coach at his former school, Auburn University. On April 5 the 5th of April, 2016he received the honor of being appointed as the head coach for the team for swimming and diving of University of Pittsburgh. Hargis began his swimming career competitively early in his life under the coach Paul Blair with the Arkansas Dolphins swim team based out of Little Rock, Arkansas. His preferred strokes included backstroke and butterfly in both 200 and 100-meter distances, as well as competing in various other events throughout his time at the club. After graduating from high school, Hargis chose to pursue an athletic career in swimming at collegiate level and decided to go to Auburn University. While at Auburn Hargis achieved a variety of success stories that concluded his collegiate career. Hargis competed in his first Olympic Games for the 100-meter butterfly, and later in a relay as in 1997 the year he was a senior and led his team to the first ever national championship. After Hargis his swimming career came to an end and he got married to his partner, Lauren and they have two children, namely John, Nathan, and Faith.

Hargis was accepted into Hargis was selected for U.S. Olympic trials in 1996. Hargis has earned a lot of notable achievements throughout his coaching career as well as his swimming career. He was named the state’s 100 Greatest Athleticians and three times Southeastern Conference 100-yard butterfly champion and a 12-time NCAA All-American. He was a participant in the 1996 U.S. Olympic team and as an Olympic gold medalist in the 4×100-meter Medley relay. He was captain of the 1997 national championship swimming team and was a part of the World Championships swim team in 1998. After his swimming career was over, Hargis was selected and received an induction into the Arkansas Swimming Hall of Fame in 2001.
