Sara Ahmed Biography

Sara Ahmed is one of the most popular and richest Weightlifter who was born on January 1, 1998 in Ismailia, Egypt. Sara Samir Elsayed Mohamed Ahmed (Arabic: Sr@ smyr lsyd “Hmd”; born on January 1, 1998) is an Egyptian weightlifter who took home the bronze medal in the women’s weightlifting 69 kg weightlifting event in the Summer Olympics. Originating from an area known as the Ismailia Governorate, Ahmed was inspired to participate in weightlifting by her parents and began competing internationally by the year 2012. At the top level, she’s won silver medals in the Mediterranean and African Games, as well as the Arab Championships. In Rio she was the very first Arab woman to be awarded an Olympic weightlifting trophy and was one of the few Egyptian woman to be awarded an Olympic medal at the top of the podium in any discipline.

Ahmed was awarded gold in both parts of the 69kg section at this year’s Mediterranean Games. The next month in the 2018 Junior World Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, she was the winner in all three categories of the 69 kg competition. At the senior event the following year, she placed 3rd in the snatch, and third in clean and jerk which was her second place overall in the 71kg division. She is currently engaged to an Egyptian Olympic weightlifter, Ragab Abdelhay.

Ahmed participated in Egypt in the 2016 Summer Olympics in the women’s 69kg event. She skipped her high school examinations in order to participate. In preparation for the Games she took part in workshops for training at Uzbekistan as well as in the United Arab Emirates, and Brazil. In Rio she took home the bronze medal and lifted the combined weight of 255 kilograms. This made her an original Arab woman to be awarded an Olympic weightlifting trophy and one of the first Egyptian woman to earn the Olympic medal, even though Abeer Abdelrahman retroactively received a silver medal in the women’s weightlifting 75 kg competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics in which the three athletes at the event were have been tested for banned substances. She was promoted from fifth to third place following the Games. Ahmed became the only Egyptian to be awarded the weightlifting gold medal in 1948 but with the condition it was Abdelrahman as well as Tarek Yehia were awarded medals retroactively at those London Games. Later that morning, Mohamed Ihab joined her in this honor by winning silver in the male’s 77kg.

Ahmed’s international journey began with her participation in the 2012 Junior African Championships in Tunis where she took home gold in the 63kg division. She did the same feat in the Youth edition within the city as well as at the 2013 Youth World Championships in Tashkent. Her first senior event was the 2013 Mediterranean Games, where she was the winner of the clean and Jerk section and finished second in the sweep competition, finishing second overall, behind Turks’ Sibel Simsek (Romela Begaj from Albania was a close second with the same number of points but with a greater body mass). Then she jumped up to the 69kg division and took the title during the 2014 African Youth and Junior Championships Then she reverted back to 63 kilograms and took home silver during the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics. She also competed in the 63kg category at the 2013 World Championships in Almaty, where she was 12th after which she returned to 69kg and took home silver in the 2015 African Games and Youth and Junior World Championships; at the latter event, she was named the top female lifter. She finished in fourth place at the 2015 World Championships in Houston and was awarded gold at the Arab Championships held in Sharm el-Sheikh.

Ahmed was raised in Al-Huaniya located in the Egyptian Ismailia Governorate. Her father (who passed away in the year 2015) as well as her older brother were weightlifters who competed for national titles and inspired her to pursue the sport in 2010. Even though her involvement in the sport was a hindrance to her studies but she was given encouragement and support from her family members and was successful at regional and local tournaments which eventually led to her securing an invitation to the Egyptian national team.

Upon her return she was honored in a ceremony held by Ismailia governor Yassin Taher, received congratulatory messages from Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and was given 500,000 Egyptian pounds. Soon after receiving the medal, she declared her intention to train for gold at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Following her victory, she encouraged the Egyptian government to do more to support its athletes, including granting more leniency for athletes in terms of taking college-preparatory exams. She has no special nutritional routine and is coached by the national team’s Khaled Korany.
