Larkin was born May 6, 1953 in Chicago. Larkin graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities from the University of Southern California’s Creative Writing program. Larkin was enrolled at UCLA as one of the first members of the EthnoCommunications program, which was eventually disbanded. Larkin was then registered at UCLA’s prestigious Film School in the Motion Picture/Television Program. He graduated with a Master in Fine Arts degree in 1982. Larkin received a Master’s degree in Education from California State University Los Angeles in 1991. He went on to be an educator for 25 years.

Larkin made two short 16mm films while at UCLA. The Kitchen (1975), her first film, tells the story about a Black woman who experiences mental illness. It compares her experience in a mental hospital to one in prison and reveals the discrimination and pressures that led to her mental collapse. Her next film, Your Children Come Back to You (1979), examines the problem of African Americans being integrated into larger communities. The film examines social and economic inequality from the perspective of a child. Your Children was followed in 1982 by A Different Image, the film for which she is most well- known. The film explores the complex relationship between a young, free- spirited woman and her best friend. As part of the major film series “L.A.,” a retrospective of her work, as well as a documentary about the making of “A Different Image”, will be shown on Friday, December 2, 2011. Part of Pacific Standard Time. Larkin graduated from UCLA and produced several projects, including Dredlocks and the Three Bears (1991), a children’s story about Goldilocks that features a Black protagonist. The upcoming project she is working on is a DVD of children’s music called “Tie Dye”, currently in production.

Alile Sharon Larkin, born May 6, 1953, is an American film producer and writer. She is associated to the L.A. Rebellion, also known as the Los Angeles School of Black Filmmakers, is believed to have “collectively imagined” and “created a Black cinema that was against Hollywood and Blaxploitation film conventions.” Along with Julie Dash, Larkin and Bill Woodbury, Larkin is part of the second generation of these pioneering black filmmakers. Larkin was also a co-founder of the Black Filmmakers Collective.

Larkin is also an author. Her article, “Black Women Filmmakers Defining Theirselves: Feminism In Our Own Voice”, was published in 1988 by E. Deidre Paribram’s Female Spectators. It was part of a informal series of 13 books called “Questions for Feminism”. Screenplays of the African American Experience, a collection of six independent filmmakers, included her screenplay for A Different Image (1982).
