Santhi Soundarajan is one of the most popular and richest Middle- Distance Runner who was born on April 17, 1981 in Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu, India. Soundarajan was born in 1981 , in the town of Kathakkurichi located in the Pudukkottai District in Tamil Nadu, India. Soundarajan lived in a hut that measured 20 feet by 5 feet just across the street from the new house she now lives in. There was no bathroom , or even an outhouse, and neither was there electric or running water. The girl is among five kids of brick-kiln laborers living in a village of rural origin in the southern part of Tamil Nadu state; she overcome malnutrition in her childhood to become a middle distance runner. Her family was unable to have a TV and was able to watch Soundarajan’s Doha race at her neighbor’s home. Her father and mother were required to leave for another city to be employed in the brickyard which paid them about the American equivalent to $4 per week. When they weren’t there, Soundarajan, the oldest child, was in charge of caring for the four children she had. Sometimes, the grandfather of Soundarajan who was a seasoned runner was able to help her parents while they were absent. In the year she turned 13 she was taught to run on an open piece of dirt that was outside the hut. Soundarajan won a silver medal in the women’s 800m race at the 2006 Asian Games held in Doha, Qatar clocking 2 minutes, 3.16 seconds. While such sex tests are not compulsory for competitors, the International Association of Athletics Federations can request that contenders take such tests at any time, and include intensive evaluation by a gynecologist, a geneticist, an endocrinologist, a psychologist, and an internal medicine specialist. Reports initially suggested that her upbringing in impoverished rural India, where she reportedly only started eating proper meals in 2004, could be a factor behind the test result. In a 2016 video petition, Santhi Soundarajan disclosed that she has been told she has androgen insensitivity syndrome.

In September 2007, Soundarajan was reported to have attempted suicide, reportedly by consuming a veterinary drug at her residence. The attempt was blamed on gender, economic, and sports pressure in India.

After graduation, Soundarajan got a scholarship from an arts college located in Pudukkottai which is the closest town. In the next one year Soundarajan moved to the college located in Chennai the capital of the state located seven hours away. She was a participant in the Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea and received the silver medal. The following year, she was selected as a representative of India in the Asian Games (run by the Olympic Council of Asia). At the 800-meter race, Soundarajan won silver with just 2 minutes, 3.16 seconds beat Viktoriya Yalovtseva from Kazakhstan with a margin of 0.03 seconds. The win resulted in Soundarajan being involved in an ongoing and unresolved argument regarding what qualifies an athlete competent to participate in the women’s division.
