The year 1992 was when Powell gained notoriety in the film of the same name Orlando written by Sally Potter. On a tight budget, Powell created elaborate costumes for the gender-switching , time-traveling character (played by Tilda Swinton) in which she was awarded her debut Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design. Powell also started a collaboration together with the director Neil Jordan, which would create five films, including The Crying Game (1992), Interview with the Vampire (1994) and Michael Collins (1996).
Following her win at the 71st Academy Awards, Powell began her collaboration with director Martin Scorsese, starting with his 2002 epic period drama film Gangs of New York, for which she earned her 5th Oscar nomination. The two reunited for the 2004 biographical drama film The Aviator, for which Powell won her second Academy Award.
In 2010, Powell won her third costume design Oscar for her work in the film The Young Victoria.
After her departure from Central, Powell began a collaboration with choreographer and dancer Lindsay Kemp, whom she loved greatly. She created costumes for his shows and the first was the production Nijinsky on La Scala in Milan. In the beginning of the 80s Powell was introduced to director Derek Jarman, who became an important mentor and character throughout her career. As per Jarman’s guidance she was able to spend a whole year making music videos. She began her journey into film in the year 1986 when she designed costumes for the film of Jarman Caravaggio.

Sandy Powell OBE (born 7 April 1960) is a British costume designer from Britain. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design fifteen times, and won three awards for her film Shakespeare in Love (1998), The Aviator (2004) The Aviator (2004) as well as The Young Victoria (2009). She also has received 15 BAFTA Award nominations, winning for Velvet Goldmine (1998), The Young Victoria, and The Favourite (2018). Powell is frequently collaborating along with director Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes who designed the costumes for seven Scorsese’s films, and four Haynes’s.
Powell was a student at Sydenham High School, and in 1978, she completed an art class in Saint Martin’s Art School. There, she met Lea Anderson, who later became a choreographer and dancer and Powell’s co-worker. When she graduated in 1979 Powell started a degree in theater design and performance at Central School of Art and Design however she was able to leave after two years, but not before finishing her studies and began working for fringe theatre groups.
Powell received dual nominations at the 71st Academy Awards for her two 1998 films, Velvet Goldmine and Shakespeare in Love. Echoing the contemporary tone of Shakespeare in Love, Powell opted to sacrifice historical accuracy in her costume designs but still managed to achieve “emotional accuracy”, according to Salon critic Stephanie Zacharek. The detail on the costumes of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Viola and the thematic significance of her costume changes were also noted as highlights of the film. For her work in the film, Powell won her first Academy Award for Best Costume Design.
