Khumalo was selected to represent South Africa at the 2012 Summer Paralympics that took place in London, United Kingdom, in the single sculls women’s race by winning silver at the final qualifying regatta held at Belgrade, Serbia. She was the sole rower on the South African team. In the Games she was 5th in the heat, with an average time of 6 mins 2.38 seconds. She was then able to enter the repechage race where she was fourth with a time of 6.23 minutes 13.23 seconds. she made it in the B Final, where she came in second place, with the time of 6 minutes 18.88 seconds. In 2005 at the age of 24 years old, Khumalo sustained injuries from a car crash. When she went to work at a safari lodge in Mpumalanga’s Kruger National Park in Mpumalanga in Mpumalanga, the Land Rover she was travelling in was struck by the truck. The accident injured her spinal cord and caused her lower body in a state of paralysis.
After her accident, Khumalo relocated to Durban and her husband was beginning his new job. in 2008, she began swimming to increase fitness in her upper body. Then she was invited by Midlands Rowing Club in 2010 they were seeking athletes. She started training with an instructor in Pietermaritzburg which is located 90 km from Durban. She then joined the Durban rowing club, and was then taken to a camp for training the team of nationals.
At the 2013 World Rowing Championships held at Tangeum Lake, Chungju in South Korea, Khumalo placed third in her single sculls heat and then second in the repechage to reach the A final, eventually finishing sixth in a time of 6 minutes 6.25 seconds. At the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, she again reached the A final via the repechage, finishing sixth in a time of 5 minutes 56.12 seconds. At the 2015 World Championships at Lac d’Aiguebelette, Aiguebelette in France, she finished third in her heat and fourth in the semifinals to advance to the B final, which she won in a time of 5 minutes 48.89 seconds. This was enough to place her in the top eight boats and ensure qualification for the 2016 Summer Paralympics to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
