In a bizarre twist, in order to take the fifth spot, he beat the second seeded Donnie Heckel of Clemson University (the school where he’d end the rest of his time in college) with 13-2. Then, he moved into Clemson where he wrestled under the guidance of Coach Gil Sanchez. He concluded his time at Clemson with the record of being the most successful athlete of all time in Clemson history, winning 71-0 during his last two seasons. He took back-to-back NCAA titles at 118lbs between 1993 as well as 1994. He won the 1994 NCAA title and also awarded ACC Wrestler of the Year. He was back at the University of Missouri to finish his education, graduating in 1995 with the degree of Park, Recreation and Tourism Management. The inductee was inducted into the Clemson University Hall of Fame in 2000. Henson is one of Clemson’s final wrestlers (the program was cut in 1995 because of Title IX) and named as one of the top ACC athletes in a conference that is more famous for its basketball.
Although most people know him as a freestyle wrestler, Henson also has Greco- Roman wrestling experience. He was awarded a gold medal for Greco-Roman in the 90 US Open, and placed 4th in 1998 at the Open. When it came to freestyle in the US Open, Henson placed 4th in 1995. He also was awarded Silver medals for 1997 and 2004 and was awarded the gold medal in 2000, 1998, and 2005.
