- He is the former leader and founder of Freedom Front Plus. From 2009 to 2014, he was the Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries within the Cabinet of President Jacob Zuma.
President Jacob Zuma appointed Mulder as Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry and Fisheries on 10 May 2009. Mulder was in office until May 2014 when he was succeeded by Bheki Cele, former Police Commissioner.
Mulder led the Freedom Front to rename it Freedom Front Plus in 2004 after it absorbed the Afrikaner Eenheidsbeweging (Afrikaner Unity Movement), a smaller Conservative Party. This was due to floor-crossing and the Federal Alliance for Dr. Louis Luyt. The new Freedom Front Plus won four seats in National Assembly at the 2004 general elections.

Mulder was born in Randfontein, and grew up there. Mulder completed his secondary education at Riebeeck high school in Randfontein. He was also head boy and Victor Ludorum for athletics. Pieter, the son of Connie Mulder, was first a lecturer at Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education before being promoted as the head of the university’s communications department. From 1988 to 2017, Pieter represented Potchefstroom as an MP in Parliament. He was initially elected for the Conservative Party (KP) at the time.
Mulder and General Constand Viljoen (former head of South Africa’s Defence Force) co-founded Freedom Front before South Africa’s 1994 first multi-racial elections. The Freedom Front won nine seats at the National Assembly’s 1994 election. At the 1999 general elections, this number was reduced to three. Viljoen, the party’s founder and leader, retired in 2001. Mulder took his place.
Mulder stepped down as leader of the Freedom Front Plus in late-2016, and was replaced by fellow MP Pieter Groenewald. He remained a member of parliament until December 2017.
