In 2017 he was criticized for claiming that saturated fats had no impact on heart disease, while at the same time admitting that he was not an expert in nutrition; he had been criticized earlier for making claims about salt and cardiovascular disease outside of the medical mainstream.

When he was in 1984 Yusuf was transferred to National Institutes of Health in the United States, where he was the lead in clinical trials that proved the effectiveness of ACE inhibitors for people suffering from left ventricular dysfunction, as well as the most effective utilization of the drug digoxin). He joined McMaster University in 1992. McMaster medical school in 1992, as the director of the department of cardiology. In 1999, McMaster founded an institute called the Population Health Research Institute at the Hamilton Health Sciences campus of McMaster and appointed Yusuf Director of the institute and vice-president of research for HHS.
From 1999 to 2004 the scientist also worked in the position of a chief scientist with The Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
He was president of the World Congress of Cardiology in 2015 and 2016.
