Magliocco, the daughter to Italian immigrants, was born in Topeka on December 30, 1959. Her father arrived in America in 1953 as a Fulbright Fellow, specializing in neurology and psychiatry. After they were married in 1958, her mother joined him. From 1960 to 1976, her family spent summers living in Italy, specifically Rome, San Felice Circeo, Lazio and Castiglione della Pescaia, Tuscany. In 1966, her family moved to Cincinnati from Topeka. Magliocco graduated in 1977 from Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Magliocco started her teaching career in Folklore, Anthropology and Post- Doctoral Research in Italy in 1989 after receiving a Fulbright fellowship. She taught at the University of Wisconsin Madison from 1990 to 1994. Other teaching positions include UCLA (1994), UC Santa Barbara (95), UC Berkeley (1995-1997), and her current position at California State University Northridge. She taught there from 1997 to 2017. In 2007, she was elected chair of the Department of Anthropology at Northridge. She joined the Anthropology Department of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada in 2017. In 2017, she was named Professor of Sociocultural Anthropology. Her teaching and research focuses on ritual, festival and religion; folklore and expressive culture (narrative and belief, vernacular healing, material culture); magic and witchcraft; modern Pagan religions; narrative; ethnic/regional/national identity issues; gender; cultural studies and critical theory; animal studies; and ethnographic methodology and writing.

In 1980, she graduated magna cum felicite from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island with a BA degree in Anthropology. She received her MA (1983), Ph.D. (1988), and M.A. (1988) from Indiana University’s Folklore Institute in Bloomington, Indiana.

Sabina Magliocco, born December 30, 1959, is a professor of Anthropology and Religion in the University of British Columbia and formerly at California State University Northridge (CSUN). She is the author of non-fiction books, journal articles, and books about folklore and religion, religious festivals and foodways, witchcraft, and Neo-Paganism in Europe, and the United States.
Magliocco conducted fieldwork in northern Sardinia (Italy), during the 1980s to study the effects of socio-economic change on traditional festivals of a pastoral highland village. This research resulted in Le due Marie di Bessude and the Two Madonnas. Magliocco’s research on contemporary Neopagans in San Francisco Bay Area provided the material for Witching Culture, Neo-Pagan Sacred Art, and Altars. Oss Tales was based on her fieldwork in Cornwall, England during the Padstow May Day celebration. Magliocco is currently working with a project that is based on traditional healing methods in Italy.
