Gunderson was a student at Holy Ghost Preparatory School, Bensalem (Pennsylvania). Gunderson graduated from Holy Ghost Preparatory School in Bensalem, Pennsylvania in 2003. Gunderson was an outstanding hockey player at Holy Ghost. Gunderson still holds the record for most points scored in a single season, with 94 goals (26 goals) and 68 assists (68). Gunderson was Ghost’s senior year coach and led them to a Flyers Cup Championship Championship and 2nd place in the State Championship. Ryan Gunderson graduated from Holy Ghost and attended the University of Vermont, where he played hockey for all four years. With 148 games, he holds the record for most career games played.

Gunderson signed a contract to play for the Trenton Devils in late 2007. They are an ECHL affiliate of New Jersey Devils. Gunderson was a star for the Devils. He scored 22 goals and 20 assists in his first 29 games. Gunderson was the Devils’ only defenseman to be selected for the ECHL All-Star Game. Gunderson’s rookie season ended with 46 points (4 goals and 42 assists), which was the most among rookie defensemen. He also ranked 4th among rookies in scoring. Gunderson’s 42 assists ranked him second among all ECHL defencemen. Gunderson was awarded the ECHL All Rookie Team 2008 for his achievements. Gunderson, who had 53 assists and 58 points in 2008-09, set a new team record. After being tied for the league lead in most points by a defenseman, Gunderson was named to the All-ECHL First Team.

Örebro initially extended Ryan’s contract on October 18, 2010, for the following season 2012 season, however Gunderson gained the attention and came to terms with top tier Swedish club Brynäs IF of the then Elitserien. In the 2011–12 season the team finished the regular season in 4th, but won the league championship in the Playoffs. At the conclusion of the 2013–14 season, Gunderson signed with Jokerit of the Kontinental Hockey League, leaving Brynäs after totaling 111 points (26 goals, 85 assists) over three seasons. In his lone season at Jokerit, Gunderson scored 6 goals and 29 assists, and tallied 6 points in 10 playoff games. He then moved on to HC Dinamo Minsk in the KHL, where he posted 27 points (5 goals, 22 assists).
