He received his secondary (WASC), and higher secondary certificatess (HSC) at the Nigerian Military School Zaria in 1977 and 1979, respectively. Akinyele then went to the University of Lagos where he received his B.A. and M.A. He then went to the University of Lagos, where he earned his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees respectively in History in 1982 and 1985. His alma mater immediately engaged him in January 1990 as a Lecturer II within the Department of History. He continues to serve the department, having progressed through the ranks until he was appointed a full professor on October 1, 2005.

Rufus Taiwo Akinyele, a Nigerian Professor in African History was born 2 February 1959 in Ido-Ekiti. He is currently the Head of the Department of History and Strategic Studies at University of Lagos in Nigeria. His research interests include African History, Inter-Group Relations, and Border Studies. He has published many articles in peer-reviewed journals of high quality in these areas. He is recognized as one of the most respected authorities on ethnic militia around the globe, thanks to his research on Oodua Peoples Congress and other topics. Akinyele is also the convener of International Multidisciplinary Conference on ‘Land and Development’, University of Lagos.
