McKay was born and raised in Glasgow. McKay is a former Fernhill School pupil and was introduced by her parents to golf. She moved from Glasgow to Girvan where she learned how to play golf. She was a successful amateur player and won the Golf Foundation Under 13 girls’ championship in 1987. In 1988, she was also the Under 14 champion. She won the Daily Telegraph Junior Golf Championship 1991, and the Girls Amateur Championship 1992 and 1993. She represented Great Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup matches in 1994 and 1996, and was a member of the Espirito Santo Trophy World Team Championship 1996.
McKay became a professional after she graduated from college. She qualified for the LPGA Tour in her first attempt and finished joint 56th at the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament, earning non-exempt status to the 1998 LPGA season.

McKay was the international first female golfer to receive a scholarship at Stanford University, California. She was also a classmate with Tiger Woods and took a Portuguese literature course together. In 1997, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. She graduated in 1997 with a B.A. in Public Policy. She was Pac-10 champion in 1997, Pac-10 All Conference in 1994 to 1997 and Pac-10 All Academic 1st team in 1997. From 1994 to 1997, she was awarded All-American honors.
In 1998, she was a rookie on the LPGA Tour. Although she has not won on the LPGA Tour yet, she was a second-place finisher in 2001, 2002, and 2003. She also claimed her first professional victory in 2003 at the AAMI Women’s Australian Open. She represented Europe at the Solheim Cup 2002 and 2003, and Scotland at the 2007 Women’s World Cup of Golf, where she finished fourth with Janice Moodie.
