Roshini Kempadoo is one of the most popular and richest Photographer who was born on March 13, 1959 in Crawley, United Kingdom. My parents could be described as being part of the “Windrush Generation”. My father, Peter Kempadoo, arrived in London in 1950s. However, my family moved between the UK (and the Caribbean) in the 1950s. As a child, I was born in England. My formative years were spent in Jamaica and Guyana between the ages 11-18. Through my childhood in Barbados, Trinidad and Guyana, I was able to get a good understanding of the Caribbean.

Format, the women’s photographic agency, was founded by Maggie Murray, Val Wilmer and she was also part of the founding of Autograph ABP, the first Black British photographic association. She was also involved with Monika Baker and Sunil Gupta and Rotimi Fani­Kayode. From the 1980s to the ’90s, she pursued a career in photography. “It was a time when we were redefining representations of black subjects.” This was a thrilling period in which photography and film shifted away from traditional visual arts studies to become more closely linked with cultural studies and criticism. This type of photography was not considered fine art. I was able to use the seminal texts by Susan Sontag and John Berger to examine photography in relation with psychoanalysis, postcolonialism, feminist studies and to reflect on photography.

She is the author of the book Creole in the Archive: Imagery, Presence and the Location of the Caribbean Figure (2016).

After attending St. Rose’s High school in Georgetown, Guyana, she returned to the UK in 1977 to complete her university education. Her family moved to Saint Lucia soon after. In her final year of study, she specialized in photography and earned a master’s in Photographic Studies from the University of Derby.

Roshini Kempadoo, born in Crawley, Sussex (England), 1959, is a British photographer and media artist. She has been a researcher and lecturer in digital media production and photography for more than twenty years. She is currently a lecturer at University of East London. She gives frequent artist and academic presentations both nationally and internationally.

Rosemary Kempadoo is her daughter. She was a student of Stanley Greaves, and was part of the Georgetown network of artists that included Aubrey Williams in 1970s Georgetown. Her younger sister is Oonya Kempadoo, a novelist and Peter Kempadoo.

She has exhibited regularly internationally, including in Trinidad, Toronto (curated by Sheila Petty, University of Regina), New York and Holland. A major retrospective of her photographic and digital art, Roshini Kempadoo: Works 1990 – 2004, opened at the PM Gallery and House in 2004 and subsequently toured.
