McKeown was a Northern Ireland under-16, under-17 and under-18 player. He also won caps at the under-19, under-19, and under-21 levels. Michael O’Neill called McKeown up to the senior team in September 2013. He sat on O’Neill’s bench as an unutilized substitute for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Portugal and Luxembourg.
On 20 February 2014, McKeown joined Scottish Championship side Cowdenbeath on a one-month emergency loan. He made his debut for the “Miners” two days later and scored 33 minutes into a 2–0 win over Dundee at Central Park. Having made six appearance and scoring once, his loan spell with Cowdenbeath was extended until the end of the 2013–14 season. He featured a total of 16 times for Jimmy Nicholl’s “Blue Brazil”, scoring two goals, as Cowdenbeath finished in ninth- place but avoided relegation with a 4–1 victory over Dunfermline Athletic in the play-off final. He was released by Kilmarnock manager Allan Johnston upon his return to Rugby Park.
McKeown joined Northern Premier League Premier Division club Warrington Town in November 2016. On 31 December 2016, he joined National League relegation strugglers Southport. He scored three goals in 19 appearances for Andy Preece’s side, who ended the 2016–17 campaign in the relegation places, and he departed Haig Avenue in the summer.
He was a former Ipswich Town youth-team player. In July 2011, he made his professional debut at Kilmarnock, scoring on his Scottish Premier League debut. He was a member of the club for three years and was on loan to Cowdenbeath during the second half of the 2013-14 season. He joined Raith Rovers on June 14, 2014 and missed only one match over the next two seasons. After a short spell at Warrington Town, he joined Accrington Stanley in August 2016 on non-contract terms. He signed with Southport four month later. He played the 2017-18 season for Warrington Town.

After a brief trial in July 2011, McKeown signed ahead of Mitchell Pique to join Kilmarnock. Kenny Shiels, manager of Kilmarnock, said that Riley played for him at 13 when he was an outside left in my Excellence Programme in Northern Ireland. He’s a talent I have always seen in him, and we can make him a great left-back. McKeown scored in his competitive debut with Killie with a “stunning 25-yard strike” in a 1-1 draw at Tannadice Park with Dundee United on 24 July. He was not able to make the first team after Jeroen Tesselaar was favoured at left back. He was a part of the Kilmarnock team that finished ninth in the Scottish Premier League in 2012-13, making 21 appearances during the 2011-12 season.
McKeown began his career in youth football for Ipswich Town. McKeown continued his development in the Ipswich youth-team and reserve teams, before he was released by Paul Jewell in June 2011. He had been awarded an academy scholarship but Paul Jewell decided not to offer him a contract.
On 23 June 2014, McKeown joined Scottish Championship side Raith Rovers. He was an ever-present throughout the 2014–15 season, helping Grant Murray’s Rovers to a sixth-place finish. He was also a near ever-present under new manager Ray McKinnon for the 2015–16 season, missing just one Scottish Challenge Cup game. Rovers secured a play-off place with a fourth-place finish, but were eliminated at the quarter-final stage following a 2–1 aggregate defeat to Hibernian.
