Ronald Suresh Roberts is one of the most popular and richest Writer who was born on February 17, 1968 in Hammersmith, England, United Kingdom. Ronald Suresh Roberts, also known as RSR (born 17 February 1968), is a British West Indian writer, biographer, and lawyer. His biographies of prominent figures in “New South Africa”, such as Nobel Prize winner Nadine Goridimer and former South African President Thabo Mabeki, are his most well- known works. Nelson Mandela described Roberts as “a remarkable, dynamic young man”. He currently resides in London, England.

Acting judge of the Western Cape High court judgement, Leslie Weinkove found Roberts guilty in a defamation lawsuit Roberts had brought against The Sunday Times. The judgment describes his actions in dealing with a South African Broadcasting Corporation complaint. Roberts’ response was published in an extensive interview by the South African Mail & Guardian. It cites a letter from Ken Owen who was a former editor of The Sunday Times. Owen acknowledged The Times’ “eagerness” to smear Ronald Roberts and said that the newspaper’s reporting on certain matters is “false.”

In 2007 the “acutely unpopular and widely reviled” author and AIDS denialist Anthony Brink accused Roberts of using elements of his own unfinished work in Roberts’ biography of Mbeki. Roberts countered that Brink had no relevant research given that as late as 2005 Brink remained a “complete stranger to the president at a personal level”.

Roberts has continued to write for many South African publications on subjects as diverse as politics, book reviews and cultural events. Roberts is known for his challenging viewpoints, indeed in a 2007 column Mail & Guardian editor Ferial Haffajee said Roberts “tests my commitment to freedom of expression”. He is Founding Director of Baliol Knowledge, an organisation through which alumni of Balliol College Oxford collaborate impact across the planet.

Roberts served in a variety of technical and political roles during the Mandela and Mbeki administrations. He also helped to defend and develop post- apartheid policy. Asmal was his Policy and Strategy Advisor. He helped to design water law reforms that were awarded the Stockholm Water Prize 2000. This prize recognizes environmental ethics and post-apartheid equalities.

Roberts was born in Hammersmith (London) to an Afro-Caribbean mother and an Indo-Malaysian father. Roberts’s parents met while he was studying law. However, Roberts’s parents decided to return to Trinidad and Tobago where Roberts was born. Roberts was raised in Trinidad and attended Fatima College High School. He then went on to Balliol College Oxford where he received the same Trinidad Government scholarship that V. S. Naipaul received. Roberts graduated in 1991 from Harvard Law School where he was a classmate and former student of Barack Obama. New York University Press published Roberts’ thesis, “Clarence Thomas & the Tough Love Crowd”: Counterfeit Heroes & Unhappy Truths. Randall Kennedy was his supervisor and he taught a Harvard class on “Race Relations and American Law”. This class became a hotbed for civil rights and campus activism. Obama attended the class in highly polarised conditions, but he did not finish it.

Roberts’s first biography was Nadine Gordimer, a white South African writer. Roberts approached Gordimer about a biography shortly after the publication of his second book. Gordimer had already admired it and described it as “blazingly honest”, “unafraid of being controversial”, and “written with verve, elegance”. Gordimer agreed that she would cooperate with the biography. However, she had to read the final manuscript before it was published. Roberts gave Gordimer a draft after years of extensive research and interviews. Gordimer was unhappy with Roberts’s depiction of her views about Israel. She also objected at a passage where Gordimer described “making up” an interesting anecdote. Gordimer also made objections to her quoting derogatory comments about prominent South Africans like Ruth First and Doris Lessing. Gordimer resisted Roberts’ offer of compromise and cited journalistic integrity. The biography was not published.

In 2007 the same newspaper incorrectly placed Roberts, Christine Qunta and others in a group of 12 signatories to an article supposedly supporting Aids denialism. Roberts complained and the Times issued a retraction and apology to the group. Roberts accepted the apology but maintained that the newspaper’s conduct was “shameful but not surprising.”
