Liza Mary Harvey (nee Browne) was born 25 October 1966 in Australia. She is an Australian politician and has been a Liberal Party member of Western Australia’s Legislative Assembly since 2008. This was her first female appointment to the post. After being unopposed in her election to replace Mike Nahan, the state Liberal leader, she is now Leader of Opposition.

Kim Hames, deputy leader of Liberal Party, announced in December 2015 that he would resign and will retire from parliament at 2017’s state election. Harvey was unopposed as his replacement in February 2016 and was sworn into office as deputy premier just a few days later. This was the first time a woman was in either of these positions. Harvey announced in January 2017 that she would run for the Liberal leadership after Colin Barnett retires. On 21 March, Mike Nahan, the former treasurer of the party was elected the party’s new leader. Harvey continued to serve as his deputy. Harvey was elected his successor without opposition after Nahan resigned on 13 June 2019. After Carmen Lawrence, she is the second female to be elected WA’s opposition leader. She also holds the title of first non-Labor woman in the position. She is also the first woman elected to major-party leadership in Western Australia, while her party was still in opposition.

Harvey was elected to parliament during the 2008 state elections. With 55.2 percent of two-party preferred vote, she won Scarborough (a new notionally Liberal seat). Harvey was appointed parliamentary secretary to Simon O’Brien in December 2010. He is the Minister for Small Business. In June 2012, she was promoted to the ministry replacing Rob Johnson, who was Minister for Police and Minister of Road Safety. Harvey was also made Minister for Small Business after the 2013 state elections. She was appointed Minister for Tourism after a ministerial reshuffle took place in August 2013. However, she lost her small business portfolio to Joe Francis. She was replaced by Kim Hames in December 2014 as Minister for Training and Workforce Development. Hames took on the tourism portfolio.
