Plumb was born in Kingston (Ontario). Plumb, a Peterborough Petes junior hockey player who won in 1970 the Max Kaminsky Trophy for the league’s top defenceman, was drafted by the Boston Bruins ninth in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. The Bruins protected Plumb after two seasons playing with the Oklahoma City Blazers Central Hockey League farm team. He was then protected in the June 1972 expansion draft. He was unable to play with the NHL’s veteran-laden team so he switched to the World Hockey Association Philadelphia Blazers a few weeks later.
As the Blazers moved to Vancouver the next season, Plumb remained with them. Plumb played in the San Diego Mariners’ 1975 season, then the Cincinnati Stingers the next three seasons and finally the New England Whalers. After playing one season with the Hartford Whalers in the National Hockey League, he was a part of the organization for two years and then he joined the Springfield Indians in the AHL.
Plumb was inducted into the Kingston and District Sports Hall of Fame on May 2, 2008.
