He was drafted from University of Massachusetts Lowell (1999-2001), of the Hockey East NCAA conference. His professional career began with Montreal’s American Hockey League affiliates, the Hamilton Bulldogs and Quebec Citadelles. He also played in the Calder Cup finals against Houston Aeros.

Ronald Martin Hainsey, born March 24, 1981, is an American professional ice hockey defender and alternate captain for Ottawa Senators of National Hockey League (NHL). He played over 1,000 NHL games, including for the Montreal Canadiens and Columbus Blue Jackets, Atlanta Thrashers as well as the Winnipeg Jets, Carolina Hurricanes (NHL), Winnipeg Jets, Winnipeg Jets, Pittsburgh Penguins, Atlanta Thrashers, Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Hainsey was a young player in the 1995 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He played with a Springfield minor ice hockey team.

On July 2, 2008, as a free agent, Hainsey signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract with the Atlanta Thrashers. He recorded 6 goals and 33 assists in his first season in Atlanta. He would go on to record 45 points in the next two seasons with the Thrashers. After their relocation to Winnipeg, Manitoba, to become the Winnipeg Jets to start the 2011–12 season, Hainsey recorded 10 assists in 56 games.
