Roman Mykhailovych Zvarych is a Ukrainian politician. He was a former citizen of the United States and one of the first to give up that citizenship to obtain Ukrainian citizenship following the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Zvarych was appointed to the Ministry of Justice in February 2005 after Yushchenko had won the election. Ukrayinska Pravda reported that Zvarych had lied about having a Ph.D. in Columbia University. Ukrayinska Pravda reported that a spokesperson for Columbia University had confirmed that Zvarych had not earned a degree from the university. Zvarych called a press conferee the next month, where he acknowledged the truth of the allegations about the Ph.D. He stated that he was an “all but dissertation” student at Columbia University and had worked as an adjunct lecturer at Columbia University. Students and colleagues refer to him as “professor”, although he has not held this academic rank. To blow out the misunderstanding, he accused the Komsomol of Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora of organizing a political smear operation.

Zwarych ran in 1994 for a seat for a single-mandate seat. He received 70% of the vote, but was not elected because he failed to meet the 50% voter turnout threshold required by the electoral law. In 1998, he was elected from a proportional party-list district. He served six years in the Verkhovna Rada, including on several committees such as the Committee on Legal Reform or the Committee on European Integration. He also worked as a lawyer outside of the Verkhovna Rada. Ukrainian courts did not require lawyers to be certified or pass a bar exam. Zvarych was able to defend a family from being evicted on one occasion. He also successfully argued a case for Viktor Yushchenko during the Orange Revolution, which took place in the midst the 2004 presidential elections. This was to stop the creation of Ukrainian voting areas in Russia.

Zvarych was the son of Soviet emigre parents, who immigrated to America during World War II. He was born in Yonkers (New York). Later interviews revealed that Zvarych stated that he took an oath at the age of fifteen to “achieve Ukrainian independence or… die fighting for it”. He earned a B.A. in 1976. He graduated with high honors from Manhattan College, Bronx.

This right-wing party. In 1995, he gave up his U.S. citizenship. He was also a politician and one of the first Americans to give up U.S. citizenship to obtain Ukrainian citizenship. In June 1997, a notification was published in the Federal Register confirming that he had lost his citizenship. His name was listed as Roman Mychajlo Zwarycz.

In the 2014 Ukrainian parliamentary election Zvarych was a candidate of Petro Poroshenko Bloc; placed 82nd on the electoral list. But the party only won 63 seats on the electoral list; hence he was not (re-)elected into parliament. But he returned to parliament nevertheless on 15 March 2018 to take the place of Valery Pakzkan who was just elected head of the Accounting Chamber of Ukraine.
