John Andrew “Rocky”, born August 16, 1950, is an ex-umpire in Major League Baseball. He worked in the American League from 1999 to 1979 and then in both the leagues in 2000 and 2001. He was an umpire in the 1990 and 1999 World Series as well as the 1994 and 1984 All-Star Games. He was also a part of three American League Championship Series (1991, 1996) and four Division Series (1995 1997, 1999, 2000). Roe wore uniform number 27, throughout his entire career.

Following the death of John McSherry, Roe took a leave to enroll in a weight- loss program. He also participated in another program in 2002. Roe submitted his resignation in 1999 as part of a union strategy. However, he quickly rethought his decision and withdrew it, saying that it was “like drinking Kool-Aid on a Jim Jones picnic”. His decision was a good one, as all resignations were accepted by Major League Baseball. In 2002, he retired.

Roe was the umpire at home plate on June 27, 1987, when Mark McGwire scored his first three-run home run. He was also the second base umpire when Cal Ripken Jr.’s record of 8,243 consecutive innings was broken. Roe was at the plate in the final game of Tiger Stadium.
