His first major tournament was the 2008 European LC Championships in Eindhoven. He rebounded from a disappointing start to the tournament by breaking the 100m butterfly national record of Joris Kizer, increasing it to 52.20 and placing 4th in final. He was 4th in the 4×100 Medley relay with Nick Driebergen and Thijs van Valkengoed. This result gave him a national record time of 3:37.00. He won a silver medal with the 4x100m freestyle team at the World SC Championships 2008, Manchester. He reached the individual finals of the 100 and 50 m breaststroke, and the 100m individual medley.
Van Aggele was disappointed in 2008 Summer Olympics. He was eliminated from the 200 m breaststroke, 100 m butterfly and 200 m individual Medley heats. A month later, he declared his intention to join Swimclub AZ&PC. He began training with Fedor Hes who had helped him in Beijing preparations.

Robin van Aggele was a new international competitor at the European SC Championships 2004, in Vienna. He finished 14th in 200 m individual medley at the World LC Championships 2005, Montreal. He finished fourth in the 100 m individual Medley at the European SC Championships 2005, 0.01 behind Vytautas Januaryusaitis.
Van Aggele was eligible for the European LC Championships 2006. He didn’t enter because he was too tired and had been training too hard. He finished 3rd in the 4x50m freestyle at Helsinki with the Dutch relay team. This was his first international medal. He was 10th in the 50 m breaststroke at the World LC Championships 2007. He was nominated for the Beijing 2008 200 m individual Medley at the June national championships. He confirmed his nomination at the end of the year and was qualified for the Dutch Open Swim Cup games. He won a bronze medal at the European SC Championships 2007 Debrecen with the 4x50m Medley Team.
He was part of the Dutch relay team that set a short-course European Record in the 4×100 m Free Relay (3:09.18) at the 2008 Short Course Worlds, along with Robert Lijesen, Bas van Velthoven and Mitja Zastrow in 3:09.18. They finished second in this event, behind the team from the United States who set the World Record.
