After the 1995-96 season Dirk was released by the Habs. He then spent one year in the IHL, before retiring to become a coach. His career ended with 13 goals, 29 assists and 42 points. He also had 786 penalty minutes.
Following his release from the Wildcatters in 2005, Dirk remained in Beaumont, Texas to take a job as the director of the Montagne Center, the home venue of the athletic squads for Lamar University. He then traveled to and from Houston, Texas to coach his son’s bantam AA team. He was the coach for the Penticton Lakers Junior B team in the KIJHL, but has now moved on to coach various teams at the Okanagan Hockey Academy for players 14-18.
Dirk was traded to Anaheim for the 1994-1995 season after only six games. He was traded to Montreal Canadiens after a season and half with the Ducks in 1996. He would break his shoulder while making his debut with Montreal. He was unable to make a name for himself and played in just three games.

Dirk was born in Regina (Saskatchewan). The St. Louis Blues selected Dirk 54th in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. In 1986, he would turn professional and spent the next five years bouncing around between the NHL club as well as the Blues IHL affiliate, the Peoria Rivermen. In 1990-91, he would be a full-time Blues player. He played in 41 games before being traded to the Vancouver Canucks as part of a 6-player trade.
Dirk would be a great fit for a young Vancouver team. Although his skating skills were not great, Dirk was a strong, tough defensive defender who was well-respected for his determination and heart. In 1991-92, he played in 72 games and scored 2 goals and 9 point in addition to 126 penalty minutes. He set career records with 12 points and 150 penalty minute in 69 games between 1992-93. In 1993-94, he spent his third season with the Canucks. However, the Canucks acquired Jeff Brown and Bret Hisdican in a deal that was made with St. Louis. Vancouver had too many defence bodies and he was sent to Chicago Blackhawks to be drafted at the trade deadline.
On his retirement as a player in 1997, Dirk accepted a head coaching job in the UHL with the Winston-Salem Icehawks. He would spend three seasons in the UHL, one in Winston-Salem before joining the Saginaw Gears for two more years. He spent the 2000–2002 seasons with the WCHL Tacoma Sabercats, before being hired as the first head coach of the Texas Wildcatters of the ECHL.
