The Buffalo Sabres announced on June 11, 2012 that Ray would be replacing Harry Neale, who was working alongside Rick Jeanneret, as Sabres’ color commentator. Ray co-hosts a weekly television program called The Enforcers on Time Warner Cable SportsNet with Ruben Brown, an ex-Buffalo Bills player. Ray is also the president of the Buffalo Sabres Alumni Hockey Team. Rayzor’s Edge is his book. Ray is currently an assistant coach of the championship-winning 10U AAA Amherst Knights in Amherst NY.

Ray, who had been the Buffalo Sabres’ primary enforcer for 14 seasons, was traded to Ottawa Senators in 2003. Ray played in just 11 games with the Senators over the two seasons. Ray was born in Stirling, Ontario. He played competitive hockey for Stirling Blues and then moved up to Tier II Jr.A. In 1984-85, he was drafted by the OHA’s Whitby Law Men. The Cornwall Royals drafted him in the 5th round 1985 OHL Priority Selection.

Ray played junior hockey for the Cornwall Royals in the Ontario Hockey League. Ray was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 5th round. He was 97th overall in 1988 NHL Entry Draft. He spent two seasons as a full-time player with the Rochester Americans of American Hockey League (AHL). He amassed a reputation for being a skilled fighter and accumulated over 700 penalty minutes in just 125 games. Ray made his NHL debut in 1989-90 with the Sabres. He scored his first goal while skating on the ice. On his final shift in the NHL, he also scored a goal. Ray was a regular player on the team from the 1990-91 NHL season. He never finished with less than 158 penalties minutes in any NHL season except his last. Ray brutally beat a Nordiques fan in 1992’s game against Quebec Nordiques. He had snuck onto the Sabres bench and attempted to approach Ray. Ray, 6’0″ tall, was considered to be one of the most formidable NHL players during the 1990s. Ray was awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy by the NHL in 1999 for his humanitarian and leadership contributions to the Buffalo and Western New York areas. He is active in many community charities and is a regular player on the Buffalo Sabres Alumni Team.
