The Tampa Bay Lightning selected Helenius 15th in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. This was partly due to his silver-medal winning performance with the Finnish national men’s hockey team at the 2006 World Junior Championships. He was a player for Ilves in the 2006-07 season, but he sustained a shoulder injury that limited him to four games.
Helenius was the 46th overall selection of the 2007 Canadian Hockey League Import draft. Helenius was added to the Thunderbirds roster in the 2007-2008 season. Helenius was chosen as the goalie of the Finnish World Junior Team at the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championships in December 2007.
For the 2011–12 season he returned to Finland and signed with JYP Jyväskylä of the SM-liiga, where he won the league championship and the Urpo Ylönen trophy for best goaltender.
