Templet was elected to Gretna’s city council without opposition on April 7, 2001 and again in 2005. This is the seat of suburban Jefferson Parish. In 2007, the term-limitation of Joseph F. Toomy, the Republican incumbent, meant that Templet was elected to House District 85. Templet was defeated by fellow Republican Billy Arnold in a runoff election, winning the legislative seat with 6,687 votes to 2,410 votes. Templet was a member of the House Committees on Ways and Means and Administration of Criminal Justice and Judiciary, as well as the Joint Legislative Committee on Capital Outlay.
