Rick Lanz is one of the most popular and richest Ice Hockey Player who was born on September 16, 1961 in Karlovy Vary, Karlovy Vary Region, Czech Republic. Richard Roman Lanz, a former professional ice hockey defenseman, was born September 16, 1961 in Karlovy Vary (Czechoslovakia). He is most well-known for his time with Vancouver Canucks. His family fled Czechoslovakia after the Soviet Union invasion in 1968. He was born in Czechoslovakia. He was born in London, Ontario.
Lanz would go through a disastrous 1984-85 season. He was limited to 19 points due to a neck injury. However, he would be back to his best the next year, scoring 53 points to lead Canuck defensemen. He was traded to Vancouver by the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Jim Benning, and Dan Hodgson midway through 1986-87. He ended the year with 28 points, in 61 games. In 1987-88, he matched that total. While he was still an important contributor to the Leafs’ offense, he was not the same dangerous player in Vancouver. Toronto released him after a horrible 1988-89 season that saw him limited to 32 games and 10 points by injuries and benchings.
Following his retirement, Lanz returned to British Columbia to accept a job in the BCHL as an assistant coach for the Penticton Panthers. He was named head coach of the Langley Thunder in 1995. He would later be united with his brother in-law Mark Holick in South Surrey and found immediate success. He took a team with super-star Scott Gomez to the Royal Bank Cup in Summerside PEI but would lose in the final to a heartbreaking game. The next season Rick would move to the WHL in 1997–98 as an assistant coach for the Tri-City Americans, although he was promoted to the head coaching position only a few games into the season. He would return to Langley the following year, and remain their head coach until 2003.
Lanz was hired as head coach of the Burnaby Express in 2004, and led the team to the Royal Bank Cup in 2006, where they were crowned Canadian Junior A Champions. He left Burnaby to sign on as head coach of the Victoria Grizzlies and after two months as head coach of the Victoria Grizzlies he was offered the head scouting job for western Canada and US for the Colorado Avalanche.
Lanz was back on the ice in 1982-83 and he scored 10 goals and 48 points to rank 6th for the NHL. Lanz was also selected to represent Canada in the 1983 World Championships. He helped Canada win a bronze-medal. This was followed by his best NHL season, 1983-84. He scored 18 goals and 57 assists (both of which were just a fraction short of club records for defensemen), and was named the team’s top defenceman. His 14 power play goals were particularly impressive, which tied him for the league’s lead with Edmonton Oilers star Paul Coffey.

At just 19 years old, he was immediately drafted to the Canucks roster for 1980-81. He had a great rookie year with 29 points in 76 games. The 1981-82 season was a disappointment. He tore his knee ligaments 39 games into the season, which forced him to miss the remainder of the regular season as well as the entire playoffs. He would be doubly disappointed to have to miss the Canucks’ surprise march to the Stanley Cup Finals in spring 1981.
After a stellar junior career with Oshawa Generals, in which he was the club’s top defenseman for three consecutive seasons, Lanz was selected 7th in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. He was also granted the opportunity to represent Canada in the 1980 World Junior Championships.
His departure from Toronto would essentially mark the end of his NHL career. Unable to find any interest in the NHL, he spent the 1989–90 season in Switzerland. He was signed to a contract by the Chicago Blackhawks in 1990, but would only play a single game for them during the 1991–92 season. Following brief stops in the minor-league systems of the Los Angeles Kings and Tampa Bay Lightning, he retired in 1993.
