While in high school, he began running in 1998. In 2001, he graduated from Moi Amalo Secondary school and joined the Kenya Police. He was fifth in the Kenyan Olympic Trials. However, he missed the Olympics and was chosen for the African Championships where he won the silver medal.
He had a strong start to 2008, winning the African steeplechase title at the 2008 African Championships in Athletics. Later that year, he won his first Olympic medal at 2008 Beijing Olympics. He finished behind compatriot Brimin Kpruto and Mahiedine Mekhissi Benabbad in Olympic final. He won bronze at the 2008 IAAF World Athletics Final, where he again managed to win medals.
He ran in the Giro Media Blenio 10K in 2010 and finished in third place behind Moses Mosop and Imane Merga.
At the Doha 2012 Diamond League meeting, Mateelong was second to compatriot Paul Koech in the steeplechase, in a new personal best time of 7:56.81. This makes Mateelong the eighth fastest man in history. He came fourth behind Abel Mutai at the Kenyan Olympic trials, however, meaning he did not gain selection for the Kenyan team.
He lives in Nyeri with his wife and one child as of 2008. Gianni Demadonna manages him. Renato Canova is his technical advisor.

Richard Kipkemboi Mateelong, a Kenyan long distance runner, was born 14 October 1983. He specializes in steeplechase at 3000 metres. He was awarded an Olympic bronze medal in 2008 Beijing Olympics, and has also won two World Championship medals for the discipline.
He competed mainly on the European track-and-field circuit and qualified for the IAAF World Athletics Finals in 2005, 2006 and 2007. He eventually won a silver medal in that edition. He continued to improve his times and set a new personal record of 8:07.50 in Rome, making him the third-fastest man that year. Mateelong’s 2007 season was a major turning point. He won the bronze medal in men’s steeplechase at the World Championships. Mateelong finished the year with a second consecutive Silver at the World Athletics Final.
The 2009 World Championships in Athletics brought a new steeplechase best of 8:00.89 for Mateelong, and although he did not beat Ezekiel Kemboi it was enough to win his first silver medal at the global championship level. He competed at the 2009 IAAF World Athletics Final (the final edition of the competition) but failed to maintain his form and finished eighth.
