This position oversees international engagements of the Institute. He was previously Head of the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering, MIT. He is also the founder Director and Faculty Chair of MIT’s Industrial Performance Center.

Lester established the MIT Industrial Performance Center in 1992. This center is an interdisciplinary research centre for the study and analysis of innovation, productivity and competitiveness. It brings together students and faculty from all MIT. What are the most effective strategies, skills, technologies and new organizational forms to succeed in competitive environments? How will technological advances now impact these options?

During this period he was also co-author of two influential MIT reports, The Future of Nuclear Power (2003), and The Future of Coal (2007).

From 2009 to 2015 Lester served as Head of the MIT Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering, leading the Department through a period of rapid rebuilding, educational reform, and strategic renewal. Under his leadership, the Department implemented its ‘Science-Systems-Society’ educational triad, which calls for the faculty to work with students to develop their knowledge and capabilities in each of these three intellectual domains. He also encouraged faculty, students, and outside investors to consider the opportunities for new business formation around innovative nuclear technologies, and several notable startups emerged from the Department during this period.

As an Associate Professor in Nuclear Engineering, he was elected Executive Director of the MIT Commission on Industrial Productivity in 1986. He led the research that resulted in Made in America: Regaining The Productive Edge (MIT Press 1989). Made in America, which was an assessment of America’s manufacturing performance, and recommendations for strengthening it, was highly influential in the U.S. as well as around the globe and was for a time the most-sold volume in the history MIT Press.
