Masao Yoshida (Ji Tian Chang Lang , Yoshida Masao, 17 February 1955 9th July, 2013) was born in Osaka, Japan and was an General Manager in the Nuclear Asset Management Department of the Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TEPCO), Japan. He was the plant’s supervisor in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, in which he performed a crucial role in disobeying the instructions from the corporate headquarters to cease using seawater for cooling the reactors. According nuclear scientist Dr. Michio Kaku, the decision to make use of seawater could have prevented a more devastating disaster. If it wasn’t for the last-minute decision to utilize seawater as a cooling agent for the nuclear reactor larger catastrophe that would have affected a large portion of northern Japan might have happened. Yoshida was able to win the trust of the prime minister Naoto Kan, who he saw the following day after the tsunami while on the tour of the plant. They both had been to Tokyo Institute of Technology. Yoshida passed away on the 9th of July 2013. He was 58 years old and still survived by his spouse Yoko and three sons. “If Yoshida wasn’t there, the disaster could have been much worse” said Reiko Hachisuka who is the head of a business organization located in Okuma city. Former prime minister Naoto Kan posted a tweet in his honor, “I bow in respect for his leadership and decision-making”.

Yoshida had been identified with esophageal cancer which was confirmed by TEPCO as not being related to the nuclear incident because of the speed of its development. He resigned as plant director in December 2012. He underwent an operation to treat the cancer, and then suffered an unfatal stroke.
