Hayward was born in 1981 and joined Hampshire. He made his first-class debut against the touring Sri Lankans. Hayward then scored his maiden first class century with a score 102*. Hayward’s List-A debut was made against Lancashire during the quarter-finals in 1981 NatWest Trophy.
After leaving Hampshire, Hayward rejoined Buckinghamshire, making his return debut against Shropshire and representing the county in 22 Minor Counties matches from 1983 to 1985, including the 1983 Minor Counties Championship Final, which Buckinghamshire lost to Hertfordshire won by 2 wickets.
In the 1984 Benson and Hedges Cup, Hayward represented the Minor Counties once again, making his List-A debut for them against Lancashire and playing his final match for a combined Minor Counties side against Nottinghamshire. In the same season Hayward made his second and final List-A appearance for Buckinghamshire against Lancashire in the 1984 NatWest Trophy.
Hayward was a Hampshire representative in thirteen first-class matches from 1981 to 1982. The last match against Surrey was in the 1982 County Championship. Hayward was a first-class match representative of the county scoring 454 runs with a batting average 25.22. He also scored one century and two third centuries, and a high score 101. Hayward also played in his last List-A match against Somerset in John Player League. Hayward scored 155 runs in his 14 List-A matches for Hampshire. His batting average was 31.00. His highest score was 44.
