- He was raised in Ellezelles, a small village in Belgium’s ‘Pays des collines. He is well-known for his witchcraft folklore. From Louvain-La-Neuve University, he studied humanities and social science until 2001. He developed a passion and interest in folklore. Pierre Dubois (famous “elficologist”), a specialist in fairies and similar beings, was a French writer Claude Seignolle’s friend and Thomas Owen, a Belgian writer. He also holds a diploma of applied ethnobotanic at Lille II University, where he has devoted his research to the cultivation of herbal remedies in the Pays des Collines area.
Richard created the idea of the “Journees Feeriques du 1er Mai” in 2012, which is a celebration of fairies that takes place simultaneously at different locations. It is an important date for fairies. Many ancient festivals, such as the Beltaine and the Floralia in Honour of Flora, are linked to May 1. The first edition of the Journees Feeriques du 1er mai’ was followed by three additional ‘1st May’ festivals: Les rencontres Feeriques de Shawinigan, Quebec; and Les rencontres Feeriques de Shawinigan, Flobecq.
Richard, along with Anthesis ASBL, a NPO he had founded in 2005, created the ‘Trolls et Legends Festival. In an interview with Le Soir, he explained how he came up the idea for such a festival. The huge success of the first film, ‘The Lord of the Rings’, was the catalyst. The ‘Trolls and Legends Festival was so popular that it became a model for many fairy and fantasy festivals in France and Belgium, such as the ‘Le Printemps Des Legendes’ Festival in Montherme, the ‘Cidre Et Dragons’ Festival in Normandy, and the ‘Feeries du Bocage’ in Voulx.
