Richard Chelimo is one of the most popular and richest Kenyan long- distance runner who was born on February 24, 1972 in Kenya. Richard Chelimo, 21 April 1972 – 15 Aug 2001 was a Kenyan long distance runner and former world record holder for 10,000m. He is most well-known for his silver medal in the 10,000m at the 1992 Olympics. He also held the world junior record in 10,000m.
Chelimo quit athletics in 1996. According to Kiptanui his cousin, Chelimo was depressed after his failure to reach the top of the sport. Chelimo returned to the army, gained weight, and started drinking heavily — a similar decline to Henry Rono’s. His friends Tanui and William Mutwol encouraged Chelimo to get back to training. Chelimo finally lost 5kg of his race weight. At the age of 29, he died from a brain tumor.
Chelimo failed to win the gold medal at the 1993 world championships held in Stuttgart, Germany. Because he couldn’t match Tanui’s pace and Haile Gebrselassie, an Ethiopian star, Chelimo finished third. Another controversial race, as Tanui was unable to match Gebreselassie’s pace and lost his shoe. The Ethiopian won the race.
