Rhys Joseph Wesser, born 31 March 1979, is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer. He last played for South Sydney in the NRL. He is a Queensland State of Origin fullback and previously played for Penrith Panthers with whom he won 2003 NRL Premiership.
Wesser was chosen to represent Queensland in the 2004 State of Origin series.
Wesser made the Aboriginal selection in the exhibition game against the New Zealand Māori side as part of the official opening of the 2008 World Cup on 26 October.
In only the second round of the 2009 season, his first with Souths, Wesser injured his knee. He made his return to the field in the 2010 NRL season.
The 2003 NRL premiers, Penrith traveled to England to take on the 2003 Super League champions, Bradford Bulls, in the 2004 World Club Challenge. Wesser was at fullback during the Panthers’ loss 22-4. Although Wesser’s try scoring declined with the addition Amos Roberts to his squad, he still scored thirteen attempts.

In 1998, Wesser made his debut. He moved from Rockhampton, New South Wales to play for Penrith Panthers. However, he had trouble pushing for a spot in the first grade with Peter Jorgensen still holding that title.
He set a Penrith club record for 2002 with nineteen tries. This included three hat-tricks. He was nicknamed “Rhys Lighting” and quickly became a fan favourite due to his line-breaking speed and acceleration. He scored on 25 occasions the following season, surpassing his previous record. This earned him the title of most prolific fullback try scorer in Australian rugby league history. The Panthers won their second premiership title by defeating the Sydney Roosters in 2003’s NRL grand final, in which Wesser was at fullback.
In 2008, Wesser announced that he would be joining the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2009 for a two-year deal. Wesser’s 113 tries is the most scored by any Penrith player.
