He also played for the New England Patriots of National Football League.

Rex Robinson, originally from Marietta in Georgia, grew up watching football style kickers such as Garo Yepremian and Jan Stenerud on Sundays. He then tried to copy what he saw. He was a popular high school student. Rex, a 15-year old on Marietta’s JV football team, kicked a 51 yard field goal in a match. The feat was confirmed by a local news station. After a few attempts, Rex managed to duplicate the kick for the camera. He was then featured on the 6 o’clock news that evening.

Rex was a senior and received many scholarship offers, but chose to attend the University of Georgia. Rex would be able to play as a freshman at UGA, which seemed like the ideal distance from his home. Rex was the team’s top scorer, and he made the All-SEC Freshman Teams in 1977. Rex would be 1st team All-SEC for 1978, 1979 and 1980 as well as Playboy All-American for 1979 & 80. Rex was also a member of the Walter Camp, Football News and Football Writer’s All- American teams. Rex was invited to the 1981 Senior Bowl. His senior year was marked by beating Notre Dame at the 1981 Sugar Bowl, and being named National Champion football team 1980 by the Bulldogs.
