Renaud Lavillenie is one of the most popular and richest Pole Vaulter who was born on September 18, 1986 in Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire, Nouvelle- Aquitaine, France. Lavillenie was the favourite to win the Olympic pole vaulting gold, but Thiago Braz Da Silva from Brazil gave him a strong performance that earned him the silver medal. Lavillenie broke 5.93m in his third attempt at the finals. To stay in competition, each of the five competing athletes had to beat or equal their personal best. Only da Silva was able to accomplish this feat. Lavillenie cleared the next height of 5.98m with his first attempt. But da Silva chose to skip 5.98m and go on to 6.03m. Da Silva then set an Olympic Record at 6.03m. After failing his previous two attempts at 6.03m, Lavillenie attempted 6.08 with his last jump, but failed to clear the bar with his knee. During the competition and medal ceremony, Lavillenie was booed and heckled by the crowd. This caused him to burst into tears and da Silva tried to console the crowd and support Lavillenie. Lavillenie later compared the incident with Jesse Owens being booed during the Olympics in 1936. However, he later regretted the comment and said it was made in heat.
Lavillenie’s 2008 outdoor personal record was 5.65m. It was achieved in Villeneuve-d’Ascq on 27 June. His indoor personal best of 5.81 meters was achieved in Aulnay–sous-Bois on 5/12/2008.
Lavillenie’s 2009 indoor personal best was also 5.80 m – he cleared that height in Moscow and to win the 2009 European Indoor Championships pole vault final in Turin.
At the 2010 World Indoor Championships, Lavillenie’s only cleared 5.45 m in the qualification round and did not qualify for the final. He enjoyed better success at the inaugural 2010 IAAF Diamond League (all events were held outdoors), in which he won four of the seven pole vault events to become its pole vault overall winner. At the Adidas Grand Prix on 12 June 2010, he won the pole vault event with a jump of 5.85 m (which was a meeting record), beating Steven Hooker into second place. Seven weeks later, he captured his first European Championships pole vault title in Barcelona, with a jump of 5.85 m in the final.
Renaud Lavillenie was born in Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire, Charente, France. His father was a pole vaulter. Renaud was 17 when he made his debut in pole vault competition.
