Rachid Yazami Biography

Rachid Yazami is one of the most popular and richest Physicist who was born on April 16, 1953 in Fes, Fès-Boulemane, Morocco. Yazami graduated from the Grenoble Institute of Technology (INPG) in 1978. He also earned a Ph. D. degree in 1985.

Yazami was made a Nanyang visiting professor in 2010. He was then promoted to the Cheng Tsang Man chair Professor in Energy at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore in 2012. He is currently the Director of Battery Programs for the Energy Research Institute (ERIAN), and a Co-Principal investigator in the TUM Create Center of Electromobility [1] laboratory. in Singapore. Yazami was the author of over 200 publications in peer reviewed journals, proceedings of international meetings, and book chapters. According to the WIPO site, he is the inventor of close to 150 patents.

Yazami is the co-author involved in over 250 published papers and the co- inventor of over 150 patents related to lithium primary and rechargeable batteries and on new battery chemistry based on fluoride ion. He served as the President of the International Battery Association (IBA) and as a Member of International Scientific Advisory Board of several international meetings, including the International Meetings on Lithium Batteries (IMLB). Yazami is the recipient of several research awards, including with NATO (Science for Peace Award), NASA (two Technical Innovation Awards), IBA (Research Award) and the Hawaii Battery Conference. He is the main Founder of CFX Battery, Inc. (now Contour Energy Systems, Inc.) a Caltech-CNRS start up company in Azusa, California and of KVI PTE LTD in Singapore. Yazami is the winner of 2012 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers IEEE Medal for Environmental and Safety Technologies.

In September 2014 Prof. Rachid Yazami was appointed by HM the King of Morocco a Corresponding Member of the Hassan II Academy of Sciences and Technologies of Morocco.

Yazami was a Research Director at the CNRS in France and a Visiting Associate at California Institute of Technology from 2000 to 2010. He conducted collaborative research on electrode materials, including nanostructured materials like carbon nanotubes and nano-silicon anodes. His cathode material research included thermodynamics studies on phase transitions in lithiated, transition metal oxides or phosphates. A new electrochemical method based on thermodynamics measurements was also developed by him. It can be used to evaluate a battery’s state of charge, health, and safety. Applications of Entropymetry include the extension of battery life through adaptive (smart), battery charging protocols, and safety enhancement.

In 1980 Yazami, a scientist, was the first to demonstrate the reversible intercalation between lithium and graphite in an electrochemical cells using a polymer electrolyte. His discovery eventually led to the commercial lithium ion battery market, which is worth more than US$80 billion. Yazami also developed other graphite materials that could be used as cathodes in lithium batteries. These included graphite oxide, graphite fluoride and graphite oxide. He founded a California start-up in 2007 to commercialize his patented discoveries, particularly those relating to fluoride ion battery (FIBs).

Yazami’s research included the study of graphite intercalation compound for lithium battery applications. He joined the French National Centre for Scientific Research in 1985 as a Research Associate. In 1998, he was promoted to the Research Director (Professor).

In 2011 Yazami founded a new start-up company in Singapore, KVI,PTE LTD, which develops and commercialises novel equipments and components to investigate novel battery materials and batteries for enhanced energy, power and cycle life performances and also to increase their safety. The KVI technology is based on thermodynamics principles and methods. KVI has exclusive license on the ETM technology, including an imbedded chip for state of charge, state of health and state of safety assessment and an adaptive (ultra-fast) charging protocole. Recently, Prof. Yazami demonstrated a new battery cell based on three electrodes, an anode, a cathode and an auxiliary electrode used to regenerate the cell after aging.
