Scarlett was traded to the Florida Panthers by the Devils for Shane Harper at the March 1 trade deadline. Scarlett was to remain in the AHL and be assigned to the Springfield Thunderbirds. He scored his first goal before succumbing to a more serious injury that ended his season.
Scarlett signed a three-year entry-level contract with New Jersey Devils in September 2012, as he was nearing the end of his junior season at Swift Current. Scarlett’s previous season totals of 9 goals and 40 assists, for 49 points, were identical to his with the Broncos.

Scarlett played hockey in midget hockey for his hometown Sherwood Park Kings in the Alberta Midget Hockey League. He was originally selected 12th by the Swift Current Broncos during the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft. Scarlett was signed later by the Broncos. He began a major junior career with the Western Hockey League at the end of 2008-09.
