Raymond McCreesh, (Irish Reamonn Mc Raois 25 February 1957 – 21 Mai 1981) was a volunteer with the South Armagh Brigade (Provisional Irish Republican Army). He was captured with two other IRA volunteers in 1976 while they attempted to ambush an observation post of the British Army. McCreesh was among the ten Irish republicans who were killed in the 1981 Irish hunger strike at the Maze Prison.
McCreesh, a 19-year-old IRA volunteer, attempted to ambush a British Army observation (OP) post in South Armagh on 25 June 1976. It was located on the Newry–Newtonhamilton Road, opposite the Mountain House Inn. British paratroopers spotted the armed, masked, and uniformed IRA volunteers approaching the OP from a hillside. The volunteers fled after the paratroopers opened fire. McCreesh, Paddy Quinn and Quinn took cover in a nearby farm house. The paratroopers entered the house and fired several shots. McCreesh surrendered to Quinn after a while and were taken to the Bessbrook British Army Base. Danny McGuinness was the third volunteer. He had taken refuge in an abandoned quarry outhouse, but was captured by police the following day. Despite being shot in the leg and arm, the fourth member of the unit was able to escape. Their surrender was made possible by local Catholic priests.
A Newry playground was named after McCreesh after a motion led by Sinn Féin, SDLP and independent representatives on Newry and Mourne District Council was passed. Unionists were unhappy with this and appealed to the Equality Commission which called for an equality impact assessment in 2008. The council sub-committee responsible for the assessment decided that naming the park after McCreesh complies with their legal requirement to “promote equality of opportunity and good relations between persons of different religious belief and political opinion”.
