In March 1983, he made his professional debut by stopping George Bailey in round two at the Royal Albert Hall. He fought for John Farrell’s BBBofC Southern Area bantamweight championship in December. The fight ended in a draw. He defeated Dave George in an eliminator for British titles in April 1984, but he suffered a setback against Sandy Odanga in February 1985. His wrist was suspected to have been dislocated.
In June 1985, he won the British title and beat John Feeney, the defending champion on points. Farrell was stopped in the eighth round by Farrell, who he successfully defended his title.
Born in Southport and raised in Warrington, Gilbody had a successful career as an amateur in which he won three national schools titles, several other junior titles and three senior ABA titles — at flyweight in 1979 and at bantamweight in 1980 and 1982. He captained the Great Britain boxing team at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, and in 1982 he represented England and won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In all he represented his country over 50 times.
