Ramdev Biography

Ramdev is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on December 25, 1965 in Mahendragarh, Haryana, India. Ramdev was born to a Hindu family, Ram Niwas Yadav (Gulabo Devi) at Saiyad Pur Village in Mahendragarh district in Haryana in 1965. Both his parents were farmers. He claims that he was paralysed at the age of two-and-a-half years. Yoga helped him to recover. He was a Gurukuls school student and studied Sanskrit, Yoga, and Indian scripture. He was Acharya Baldevji’s student in Gurukul Kalwa. He also learned yoga from Guru Karanvir (Arya Samaji). He was a sanyasi-diksha student and took Swami Ramdev’s name from Swami Shankar Dev Ji. Ramdev provided free yoga training for villagers while he lived in Kalwa Gurukul, Jind district, Haryana. He then moved to Uttarakhand and practiced meditation and self-discipline.

113 employees from Divya Yoga Mandir Trust started a protest for minimum wages in March 2005. They also demanded that employees have access to the Provident Fund, Employees’ State Insurer schemes and coverage. The workers, management, and the district administration reached an agreement. Management agreed to pay the minimum wage and not to take disciplinary action against protesters. In turn, workers agreed to restore order at work. The Trust refused to return some workers and accused them of sabotage. The Centre of Indian Trade Unions CITU was affiliated with the Communist Party of India Marxist CPM and took up their case.

Patanjali Ayurved is a consumer packaged goods company, based in Haridwar, that was started by Ramdev and Balkrishna in 2006. According to a company official, sales in early March 2016 were ₹ 45 billion (US$630 million) with monthly sales of ₹ 5 billion (US$70 million)–₹ 5.5 billion (US$77 million). According to a report by India Infoline (IIFL), at least 13 listed companies would be affected by Patanjali’s success including Colgate, Dabur, ITC and Godrej Consumer. Acharya Balkrishna remains the CEO of Patanjali Ayurved with 95% shareholding and supervising its day-to-day activities, while Ramdev remains the face of the company and makes most of the business decisions.

Ramdev founded an organisation called the Bharat Swabhiman Trust in 2009, in part, to support his political activities. The financial arrangements of this and his two other trusts, the Divya Yog and Patanjali Yogpeeth, came under ECI scrutiny during the 2014 elections because of a complaint that they were being used to fund the campaigns of some political parties.

Ramdev’s main yoga centre is located in Haridwar. It is located on the banks of Ganga near the Himalayas foothills. Ramdev practices and teaches yoga there in the mornings and in the evenings in an auditorium that is also broadcasted on TV channels. Ramdev established the “Divya Yog Mandir Trust” in 1995. Aastha TV started featuring Ramdev in its morning yoga segment in 2003. He gained a lot of popularity and proved himself to be telegenic. His Yoga camps attracted many people, some of them celebrities from India. His students also came from Japan, USA, Japan, and the United Kingdom. He also addressed Muslim clergy at the Deoband, Uttar Pradesh seminary. Kofi Annan invited him to give a lecture at the United Nations Conference on poverty alleviation in 2006. He is also the judge on Om Shanti Om, a reality television show. A district court in 2017 stopped the sale of an unauthorised biography about him, entitled Godman to Tycoon – The Untold Story Baba Ramdev. Swadeshi Samriddhi SIM card cards were launched by Ramdev in partnership with BSNL in May 2018. He was the face of Patanjali Ayurved over a twenty year career. The company he co-founded with Balkrishna. Patanjali rose to be one of India’s top-grossing FMCG companies.
