Mahato was the first child of Khobhari Mahato and was born in Sarlahi, Nepal, on 19th November 1958. He is a Master of Law. He was born in India and became a citizen of Nepal through naturalization 35 years ago.
Mahato lost his seat to Mahendra Rai Yadav, Terai Madesh Sadhbhawana Party Nepal in the 2013 constituency elections. From the five constituency seats that were allocated to the party by proportional representation, the party nominated Mahato’s wife Sahil Devi to the Constituent Assembly.
His political career began in 1990. He was the Nepal Sadbhavana Party candidate for Sarlahi-2 in 1994’s parliamentary election. He finished second with 10173 votes. He won the seat with 14750 votes in 1999’s parliamentary election, defeating Surya Bahadur Thapa, former Prime Minister of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party. Mahato left NSP(A), and founded his own party. It was later named Sadbhavana Party Mahato. He resigned from the interim Parliament on January 19, 2008.
